The 100-Hour Core of Knowledge Course
Everything Maryland requires of the Administrator-in-Training core course — organized around the Board-approved text, taught with real examples from a working facility.
Who this course is for
You’re pursuing a Maryland nursing home administrator license — either already registered as an AIT with a preceptor, or planning to be. This course satisfies the 100-hour core of knowledge requirement of the AIT program.
Not an AIT yet? You can still enroll. Starting early is a good way to learn the industry and confirm the career before you commit to a full AIT program.
What you’ll study
The course follows The Principles of Health Care Administration by Joseph Townsend — the reference text approved by the Board of Examiners — across the domains an administrator is responsible for:
- Physical environment & plant operations
- Leadership & management
- Accounting, finance & the business office
- Human resources & staffing
- Resident care & quality of life
- Regulations, compliance & more
How it’s taught
The theory is delivered online and through the textbook, self-paced. Alongside it, you’ll receive samples, discussion topics, and real documents by email — drawn from the day-to-day operation of a working Baltimore facility, so every domain is grounded in how the job actually runs.
How you’re assessed
Essay assignments confirm your mastery of each domain. You’ll also get regular check-ins by email so gaps get addressed early, not at the end.
Your timeline
You have 12 months from enrollment to complete the course. Most students working full-time finish comfortably within that window; if the course isn’t completed in 12 months, re-enrollment is required — so we help you pace it from day one.
After the course
With your 100 hours complete, you continue your AIT program hours under your preceptor and prepare for the licensing exams. The Maryland licensure guide walks the full path from AIT registration to license.
When exam time comes, don’t start from scratch: NHA Study Center — our companion exam-prep platform — covers the federal NAB exam with 1,070+ scenario-based practice questions, comprehensive domain-by-domain chapters, and a mock-exam mode, with lifetime access. Finishing the 100-hour course and rolling straight into NAB prep keeps the material fresh when it counts.
